Maple vs. Ash vs. Birch: Which Wood Bat Is Right for You?

There is no single best wood for a baseball bat. Maple, ash and birch each feel different, so the right choice depends on how you hit and what you want from your bat.

Quick comparison

WoodFeelOften suits
MapleHard and densePower hitters who want a firm barrel
AshLighter and more flexibleContact hitters and players new to wood
BirchBetween maple and ashHitters who want some of both

Maple

Maple is the hardest of the three. Many power hitters like its firm feel. It is less forgiving when you miss the sweet spot, so it rewards consistent contact.

Ash

Ash is lighter and more flexible, with a whip through the zone that many hitters like. Ash can flake with heavy use, which is normal for this wood.

Birch

Birch offers some of the hardness of maple and some of the flexibility of ash. It is a good option if you are unsure, or moving from ash to something firmer.

Your bat model matters too

Wood is only part of it. Handle thickness, barrel size and balance change how a bat swings. Our custom wood bat guide compares each model by hitting style, and all of our adult models come in maple, ash or birch.
